Here I am Joan, I'll save the day for you! :)
Firstly understand that people will crow, complain or compliment all ISP's as everyone has unique situations and can be ignorant or bias. Overall however, some isp's get more complaints then others. As a rule of thumb, I consider these either the very big ISPs (where you get lost in the system), the fringe ISP's (who'll do anything to get your business) or the very very cheap ISPs (they're cheap for a reason - and it's usually bad).
iiNet (like Internode) sit in between this lot. Having experienced many years of Internet use with both these providers, I can tell you now that iiNet is in a great position to offer extremly good-value-for money products (and no i do not work for them). As like the rest of the industry, things can change but iiNet appears to be working their way up steadily.
They have a new product out called Naked DSL (which is ADSL2+). This service gives you the option of 'doing away' with a monthly phone rental altogether. If the need for a home phone is required, you should look at a VoIP (service) that they can offer too. Naked DSL together with VoIP is currently the way to go for fixed line broadband/phone as it's cheap cheap cheap. There is a learning curve with installation but hey, you'll get around it as their customer support will help.
Apart from Naked DSL, any of their other ADSL/ADSL2+ products will do the job also. Same can be said about Internode. Both have been around for years and are the best value quality providers in my opinion.
As for 24 month contract fee.... I agree, don't get locked in... pay the excess up front fee for a non fixed contract. Unfortunately most providers will make you pay a connection fee like this but hey, such as life!
Hope this helps, if there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to ask.
